Start with prevention through smarter design

Share these numbers internally so that design, procurement, and logistics see the same reality. Over time, the data will show which formats work in practice and which need to be retired or redesigned.

Engage suppliers on performance, not slogans

Write specifications that ask for durability thresholds, washability standards, and recycled content verified to a recognised method. Ask converters and fillers to demonstrate how designs will run on existing lines without excessive waste. Keep trials short and decisive so that improvements reach scale rather than lingering in pilot mode. Long supplier relationships with clear targets and predictable orders unlock investment in better tooling and processes.

Make consumer experience effortless

Circular systems survive only if they are easy. Labels should explain disposal or return in a few words that anyone can follow. Refill and return stations must be clean, quick, and reliable. Pricing should not punish the user for doing the right thing. When the experience works on a busy day with a child in one hand and a bag in the other, you know the design has succeeded.

Align packaging with product shelf life and risk

Packaging is a safety and quality tool. Circularity must respect that purpose. For short shelf life goods, reuse can thrive because containers cycle quickly. For long shelf life or sterile products, high quality recycling may be the better path until reuse infrastructure is strong enough to guarantee hygiene and traceability. Make these trade offs explicit so that teams understand why different formats exist.

Plan for regulation without waiting on it

European rules are evolving toward clearer responsibility for the full life of packaging. Brands that move first benefit from smoother compliance and from learning curves that reduce cost. Start with categories where you control the route to market and build from there. Document the design rules, material choices, and collection partners so that scale up across markets is a process rather than a series of experiments.

A practical twelve month program to get moving

Select two high volume stock keeping units and run a design for circularity review. Strip unnecessary materials, simplify layers, and confirm recyclability in the markets where you sell. In parallel, choose one category for a reuse pilot in a region with predictable routes. Set clear success criteria for return rates and cycle counts. Upgrade supplier contracts to require verified recycled content and durability performance. Track the results monthly and decide on scale up at the end of the year. This cadence builds internal confidence and creates a template for additional categories.
